Splitting Pairs in Online Blackjack
If you get dealt any pair you will be given the option to split your cards into two new seperate hands.
If you decide to split you are effectively now playing 2 hands at a time instead of just 1 andmust place another wager equal to your first wager on the table. You will then play each hand out individually before moving to the next hand.
Below we highlight some of the splitting decisions and explain why to increase your understanding of the game and therefore making the remembering of the blackjack strategy chart easier to remember.
Always split aces. Is an easy decision because you are much more likely to get a better starting hand than starting on a soft 12.
Always split eights. A hard 16, which is a pair of eights is the worst starting hands, so you must always split.
Never split 5s. Starting with a total of 10 gives you a strong starting hand, against a weak 5 if split.
Never split 10s. A starting total of 20 is too powerful to be broken up. A split, even against a weak dealer card is just increasing your risk of losing the hand.
For how to play all other pairs against the dealers up card please see our starting hand chart.
